MISSION

Art in Common is a non-profit organization committed to creating new experiences of contemporary art for the broadest possible audience outside of traditional art-viewing spaces.

Art in Common is guided by five foundational principles: art is a basic human right; art is a means of telling our stories; art should be free and accessible to all; and finally, through art we can and must find our common ground.

Art in Common is a platform for urgent ideas, unbound by geographic location or the confines of a traditional—it is both time sensitive and site-responsive.

At the core of our program are expansive and ambitious group exhibitions that speak to the most pressing creative, sociopolitical, and spiritual issues of our time; pop up in cities around the world in unlikely spaces; and present a combination of historic works by canonical artists alongside newly commissioned site-specific works by emerging artists.

These exhibitions are designed to conjure a new kind of public commons, transforming singular found spaces through art and community intervention.

Public programming, education, and collaboration are central to Art in Common’s mission as fundamental ways that art becomes activated and appreciated. In each city where Art in Common produces exhibitions, we engage with local art organizations, schools, fairs, museums, curators, businesses, musicians and more. We seek to create dynamic programming that activates the artwork on view and enlivens the exhibition space as one of convening, conversation, congregation, and social engagement. Future programming will include site-specific, large-scale commissions to help artist’s realize projects that otherwise wouldn’t be possible, and documentary film projects that aim to make artists’ visions and stories more accessible to all.

Art in Common is feral in the truest sense of the word—wild and free: to change with the times, respond to the moment, switch gears, swivel perspectives or change directions to ensure that we continue our work in the most relevant and necessary ways.

Vision

Art in Common is a non-profit cultural and civic enterprise committed to generating new experiences of contemporary art for the broadest possible audiences, forging new platforms beyond traditional commercial and institutional art-viewing spaces. Through the creation of public commons with art at the center, Art in Common convenes and catalyzes urgent idea sharing that is unbound by geographic location or the formats of a traditional program—supporting creative practices that are time sensitive and site responsive.

At the core of its program are expansive and ambitious group exhibitions that speak to the most pressing creative, sociopolitical, and spiritual issues of our time. These exhibitions are designed to conjure a new kind of  public commons, transforming singular found spaces through art and community intervention. Art in Common reconceptualizes contemporary myths of who and where art belongs, bringing to these spaces a combination of historic works by canonical artists and new site-specific commissions by emerging artists. Public programming, education, and collaboration are central to the mission and a fundamental way to bring art to life for a broad public. In each city where exhibitions are produced, Art in Common engages with local art organizations, schools, residencies, art fairs, museums, curators, local businesses, musicians and more.

Mission

AIC is working to develop new principles and formats that expand opportunities for a broader public to be welcomed into the ‘art world’ and feel empowered to add their voices to artist-led local, national and international conversations on issues affecting their lives and their communities.

AIC is creating dynamic programming that activates the exhibition space as a place of convening, conversation, congregating and civic engagement. Future programming will also include large-scale commissions that enable artists to realize dream projects in public spaces, and documentary film projects that designed to make artists’ visions and stories more accessible to all. We are guided by the communities in whose space we are activating.

Values

Art in Common is feral in the truest sense of the word—wild and free: to change with the times, respond to the moment, switch gears, swivel perspectives or change directions to ensure that we continue our work in the most relevant and necessary ways.

Art in Common is guided by five main foundational principles: that art is a basic human right, that art is a means of telling our stories, that art should be part of the public realm and accessible to all, and finally that through art we can and must find our common ground.
